Since our history posts have been getting the most views, we will start this one by presenting historical information! The White Mountain National Forest came about in 1914. It was seven thousand acres. It is now a whopping eight hundred thousand acres :O Remnants of old buildings, railroads, camps, dams, and more still exist. See if you can spot them!

The forest is great for a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, running, biking, fishing, birdwatching, camping, skiing, snowshoeing, and ice climbing. Traversing the trails here requires maximum physical exertion due to the high elevation. According to AllTrails.Com, the Welch-Dickey Loop Trail is the best. It is 4.4 miles long and is adjacent to the Waterville Valley. As with other trails we have mentioned, make sure you have boots with traction if you want to hike during winter. Hiking poles are also highly recommended. You can see a complete list of the best trails on the website. You can also view a list of the best campgrounds on StateParks.Com.

Things to remember:

  • Damaging or moving the remnants of old objects is illegal

  • There is a $5 fee for parking near the Welch-Dickey Loop Trail

  • Very important: read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section for the forest on Fs.Usda.Gov before visiting! It has specific information about fees, recreation passes, reservations, and more

The Hobo Junction Station (train station) is next!

Have you seen a beautiful view of mountains like this at another National Forest?
