Tapped Apple Cidery & Winery opened in 2017. The owner, John Wiedenheft III, had been distilling apple wine in his own basement since 2003. His delectable creations first became popular with his friends and relatives. John IV, Wiedenheft's son, expressed interest in helping his father with his hobby. They came up with their own signature drinks that were so unique that they had never been seen in the southern New England area :O John IV's son John V became involved in the business as well.
This destination's tasting room was the first of its kind in Westerly. You can sample a platter of six apple wines, six hard apple ciders, or a combination of both (they have eleven total). You can also buy snacks to accompany your platter, such as Rhode Island chocolates and cheese and crackers. If you do not want to spend money on snacks, eating your own is permitted. We sampled three wines and three hard ciders, and they were all very good. The one that stood out the most to us was a wine called "Light My Fire". This one actually tastes more like scotch and has a slightly smoky flavor. Unique!
Besides the drinks, the thing we enjoy about the tasting room is that there is artwork from Rhode Island artists on display. If you have been following us since we covered Historic Smithville Park in New Jersey, you know that we are passionate about supporting artists. We both created our own artwork in the past. Sift Bakery in Watch Hill is next!
