A historic house with an intriguing background.

Nelson House, History Sign. Photos by Nature Photographer Pam Hirst at PKH Photography. Writing by Freelance Content Writer and Travel Blogger Meghan Hirst at Meghan Hirst, Writer.

As the sign indicates, this house was not around when the crossing event took place. It is actually a kitchen and ice house that was left unscathed by a runaway train incident in 1904. It was part of the Alexander Nelson Hotel. Pretty amazing!

Nelson's hotel had twenty-two rooms. Sadly, this is the only section left because the rest was dismantled by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the 1930's. In 1980, the Washington Crossing Park Association did some refurbishing and preserved it.

You can find more details about the freak train accident and see who else owned this property on Washington Crossing Park Association's website.

We will be presenting the Delaware River Bridge and views of the river next!

Have you ever seen a historic landmark that has an interesting story behind it?
