European settlers came to Stonington, Connecticut in 1649; a man named Thomas Stanton was the first settler. This seaside town was not officially founded until the harbor began to be used for industrial, financial, and exploratory purposes around 1750. The houses that the sea captains constructed during this time period are still standing today. Due to this being a major town, it was targeted by British soldiers during the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. The settlers emerged victorious in both battles. A commercial fishing fleet—the only one left in the state—remains in operation.
