A man with the last name "Dewey" ran a well-known wool producing establishment called the A.G. Dewey Company here in the 1800's. The wool mill was built in 1869 and had hundreds of employees :O Dewey's Gray was invented in 1875 by Dewey himself. The wool was utilized to craft blankets for US Army and Navy soldiers and baseball uniforms. In 1952, the mill closed and reopened in Enfield, New Hampshire.
The US Army Corps of Engineers wasted no time in purchasing the property. A campground and picnic areas were added a decade later. The State of Vermont assigned the duty of caring for the land to the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation in 1965.
