We are dedicating this post and part 4 to Robert S. Hirst, Jr., who was my grandfather and my mom's father-in-law. He lost his battle to kidney cancer on March 18th, 2021. It has been a very difficult two weeks for us and my dad and brother. He loved going out to eat at restaurants and going to his local park. If you are following our Facebook page, you have probably seen the kind note that I wrote about him. If not, follow the link at the bottom of our blog if you want to read it. He was a remarkable human being and we were blessed to have him in our lives!
In part 1, I discussed Corky Danch founding the Allentown Feed Company, which is located inside The Old Mill. The Moth Coffeehouse is owned by him, Kris, and two of their other family members Zoe and Alia. The four opened the little eatery in October 2015. They were caught off-guard when Allentown's annual fall festival rolled around because they got swamped by customers! However, after the festival was over, business declined. Fortunately for all of them, it picked up after only a week and they started doing really well. There is a unique story behind their name "The Moth". 2008 to October 2015 was an arduous time for Corky and his family. The Old Mill became emanate domain because a dam and bridge near it were being repaired. Once the repairs were finished, Corky bought the property back. The name of the restaurant is based on the luna moth, which symbolizes new beginnings. Quite an appropriate name!
The foods and drinks at this vegetarian and vegan restaurant are delectable! I have had the vegan chickpea sausage sandwich, the beet burger, the espresso chocolate cake, and the hot and cold matcha lattes with soymilk. My mom has had the grilled cheese, the vegan tofu egg salad, the cafe au lait, and the hot matcha latte with soymilk. The chickpea sausage sandwich blew my mind! You almost could not even tell it is vegan because the texture and spices were spot on! I highly recommend trying this particular dish first. Fair warning: it is a little spicy because it has pink peppercorns, so it is not suitable for people who cannot tolerate spice. I also loved the cold matcha latte because the soy really meshes well with the flavor of the tea. I was not as impressed with the beet burger, the espresso chocolate cake, or the hot matcha latte. It was apparent that the burger was not meat and the flavor was nothing special. The flavor of the cake was very good, but the textures of the icing and the cake itself were not as rich as non-vegan cake. The temperature of the latte sort of muddled the flavors, so it was not as good. Out of every dish my mom tried, she enjoyed the tofu egg salad the most. She was blown away by the texture and flavor like I was with the sausage. She enjoyed the grilled cheese as well even though there was a bit too much stoneground mustard on it. She also liked the cafe au lait, but would add more raw sugar to it next time. Like me, she did not care for the hot matcha latte.
My brother had a non-vegan chocolate chip cookie that my mom brought home for him and he enjoyed it. He has no interest in trying vegan food -_- He does not know what he is missing!
The Moth's menu is currently limited due to COVID-19. However, every item discussed here and all of their drinks are available! Their hours of operation are limited as well (Thursdays through Saturdays from 9 AM to 5PM) and they are doing takeout orders only. You can only order and pay by phone. As with other businesses during this time, you are required to remain six feet away from other customers and wear a mask. Their phone number is (609) 208-3900. If you have any questions, you can also reach them at mothcoffeehouse@gmail.com.
My mom and I are not vegetarian or vegan. Therefore, we are not experts on the quality of these types of dishes. Your opinions may differ from ours. We are just open to trying new foods and drinks.
We are planning on going back to The Moth after we get our COVID-19 shots. We cannot wait!
Heritage Park—located right in Allentown—is next!
If you have eaten vegan food, what is the greatest dish you have ever had?
